A letter to Ben Sasse
Conservatives outsized focus on voter fraud, despite evidence actual fraud is statistically insignificant
Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse keeps trying to be conciliatory. In a much-circulated Facebook post he explained in great detail why he would not join with other Republicans to overturn the election on January 6th, calling on his colleagues to “reject this dangerous ploy.”
Sasse’s post reviewed the court rulings from five states where Trump’s team tried unsuccessfully to contest the election results.
He focused on the court rulings because there’s “a giant gulf between what President Trump and his allies say in public… and what President Trump’s lawyers actually say in courts of law.” Pointing out “there are serious penalties for misleading a judge.”
It shouldn’t have had to be said, and I appreciated Sasse’s effort until he attempted to address the constituent who might be worried about voter fraud.
Sasse takes voter fraud seriously saying “actual voter fraud — and worries about voter fraud — are poison to self-government.” But Sasse also wrote, “the media flatly declaring from on high that “there is no fraud!” has made things worse.” Claiming, “it has heightened public distrust, because there are…
