A lot of people, not just men, would benefit from following Dan Savage’s advice. Years ago he responded to a gay teen stuck in the middle of nowhere by saying (I’m paraphrasing from memory);
This is temporary. When you turn 18 and graduate you can leave this small town and go where you’ll find people more like you. In the meantime, read books, pursue interests. Become an interesting person, and you will attract interesting people to you. He later ran essentially the same column to a straight female teen in a similar situation. It’s one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever read.
Read books, inquire about the world, become an interesting person, and you will attract interesting people to you.
