I will never defend the South's racism. But one of the reasons why I think we're so divided is along the lines of what you point out; the North simply isn't much better. (Hello, redlining and white flight?) Yet a certain set (white liberals) still rail away at the South. I think that's part (maybe a small part) of why some white folks dig in an get defensive.
