I wonder how many men actually follow the advice of pick up artists. I know they have influence because you can see the ripple.
That said, I don't think it's manipulation to put your best foot forward, or present yourself in a positive light. Photos do matter, but they're not the only thing. Being real is important, but be you tactful with what information you put on your profile, and don't vomit up every detail on your first date. I've always thought the movie Hitch did a pretty good job on advice to awkward guys: "She wants to know the real you, just not all at once."
