I’ll admit, I never understand the resistance to paying a living wage or more equitable distribution of profits. Often it comes out as dismissive sarcasm, sometimes disbelief, and sometimes even hostility. I’ve never actually eaten at Five Guys, it was simply a good photo for the article. Though I hear they try to be better than the major players, they don’t actually pay much better for rank and file workers.
I seldom eat fast food; it just doesn’t appeal. I prefer a local pub or tavern and am willing to pay more there. Though I don’t think it’s that much more, especially when one factors in the number of fast food workers that qualify for welfare. In other words, we’re paying more for that burger than the cost at the store. And I do tip, in fact COVID has made me far more generous than I ever was before. However, tipping in the US is rooted in slavery, as a way to keep wages down for newly free black American’s. Sexual harassment is also entwined with tipping. We should be paying a living wage, and discard tipping.
