It's not just the US, many Asian cultures have work or success expectations that lead to over-work. I heard an interesting story on NPR in the last few days about youth in China who are resisting 6 day work weeks. It's call tang ping or lying flat, Chinese slang for a personal rejection of societal pressures to overwork and over-achieve.
