Serious question: do you think Boyz N The Hood was written for black folks?

After reading your critique, I’m wondering. I watched it in a mostly white liberal college town, and its impact remains. Mostly because I. simply. did. not. know. Growing up safe and secure, I didn’t know about a lot of things. I think maybe it was the policing by helicopter. Or the policing in general. Or how the neighborhood and drug use was depicted. I hadn’t seen black parental figures like Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne before.

I thought New Jack City sucked, and was basically a modern blaxploitation movie. And I always take Hollywood storytelling with a grain of salt. But Boyz N The Hood offered a lot I hadn’t seen or heard or thought about before of the black experience. And I remember feeling that I should have known.
