Did they have to? No. Was there demand to open it up for development and could private companies do it better? Yes. Did any of the companies who have profited so handsomely since, share profit with the government? No. Hell, Amazon didn’t even have to pay taxes the first 18 years, while competing with Mom and Pop retail.
Now, somewhere in your frothing, we may be able to agree that we don’t actually have truly free markets, the way we (both consumers and governments) prop up corporations who make shitty products. But when you label socialism as communism, you lose me. Capitalism needs guard rails, we’re doing it wrong currently, but I’ll never, ever support unbridled capitalism.
